"Lakhamandal" The Lost Temple

Lakhamandal is an ancient Hindu temple complex, situated in the Jaunsar-Bawar region of Dehradun District in the state of Uttarakhand. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Lakhamandal gets its name from the two words: lakha (Lakh) meaning "many" and mandals meaning "temples" or "lingam". This temple is popular among the Shakti Cult, who believe that a visit to this temple shrine will end their misfortunes.

Among the Shivling present in the complex, the dark green Shivling is said to be of Dwapar era when Krishna took incarnation. The red Shivling is of Treta Yuga when Rama took incarnation. When you offer water in a Shivling present in the temple premises, you see your reflection in it.

Statues of Lord Shiva, Parvati, Kaal Bhairav, Kartikeya, Saraswati, Ganesh, Durga, Vishnu, Surya, Hanuman etc. are present in the sanctum sanctorum of this Shiv temple in the style of Kedarnath. Apart from this, there are also statues of Pancha Pandavas including Yudhishthira.

According to another story, when the Pandavas came to the Himalayas after the war of Mahabharata, they built this temple and established one lakh Shivalingas here. It is said that Lakha means lac and Mandal means gender. That is, due to the establishment of one lakh Shivlingas, this place is named Lakhmandal.

The earliest evidence of structural activity at Lakhamandal goes back to circa 5th-8th century CE, on the basis of bricks structure noticed below stones build the pyramidal structure. A stone inscription (6th century CE) of the site records the construction of Shiva temple at Lakhamandal by princess Ishwara, who belongs to the royal race of Singapura, for the spiritual welfare of her late husband Chandragupta, the son of the king of Jalandhar.

The 2 idols present in the western part of the temple are said to be the gatekeepers, Jai, Vijay. It is believed that after placing a deceased person in front of these idols, the priests used to sprinkle Ganga water on it and that person used to get up. As soon as he was alive, he used to take the name of Shiva and put Gangajal in his mouth and he would renounce his body and go to heaven. It is said that once a woman tried to take away her husband who was alive, this miracle has not happened since.
